If youve made a hundred mistakes, you can look ahead to a thousand. When youve got it all figured out, you may think back on your errors, but you dont need to. That is, we want to take an action which will bring an outcome, and then we want to figure out how to get to that outcome. This is an important skill. The way to avoid having your mind wander to old past conversations is to keep it focused on the present.
In other words, when we run out of time, we spend too much time trying to figure out how to get to the next step in our current activity. We are always looking for the next best way to accomplish the present task. The problem is that we spend this time on things we don’t need to do. We are always looking for the next thing to do. What we need to do is make progress. We need to get our work done.
