I recently read an article titled “10 Quotes About Glow” by Dr. L. Douglas Wood. He talks about how our brain is a machine in the first place, and how the way we treat the outside world can have a huge impact on how our brain thinks.
I read that article and it reminded me of a quote I’d been hearing for a long time: when we hear someone say “good morning” to the person in the room across the hall, it’s as if we’ve been hearing that person’s voice for days, and we forget it’s really him.
I tend to think it has something to do with people having the same voice, but I could be wrong. The quote I remember most is by the legendary American comic book writer, Robert Crumb. In his comic book, “Glow”, Crumb said, “Nobody can read you and still want to live” (in the context of a fictional comic book).
I have to agree with Crumb on this one. In the context of a fictional comic book, there is no such thing as a real person. If that makes sense, then, yeah, nobody can read you, and no one would want to live with you. In my experience, that’s a very limiting notion. That’s why most people who want to be in comics are in a very small handful of super hero or sci-fi or horror comics who have the ability to read people.
In the context of a fictional comic book, a lot of people can read you. So in the world of comics, the main thing that keeps us all from reading each other is the fact that it takes so many hours to read us. Which is why, even though the average person probably only reads the comic in one sitting, the comics are still filled with quotes about reading and quotes that are so true that they can’t be said in any other context.
It’s not just comics that quote our behavior, it’s movies too. From the way we talk to each other to the way we sit, eat, and drive, we all have quotes about how we read, how we speak, and how we drive. We watched it because it was our first experience with a truly great movie. We watched it because it was just great. It was everything we wanted it to be, and it ended up being the best movie of 2011.
