I’ve often argued that you shouldn’t use your phone when you use your car. It doesn’t have to be that way. It has to be in the car.
I have to say that a lot of car reviews have said that their driver is really bad at following traffic rules. But Ive never had a problem with cell phones. If I get stuck behind a car, I have a hard time reaching for my phone to check my email, Facebook, etc.
But its not just cell phones. While I can’t say I’ve ever had any trouble with using the phone in my car, I’ve had more problems than I can count with not having it with me. My favorite example of this is in college when I was driving home from class. I was getting a good mile in each direction in my car, but then I got an email from my roommate who was in the car next to mine.
I was in a rush to get home and was behind a car whose passenger, a teenage girl, was texting with her phone all the way. The only way she could be texting and be talking on her cell phone was to hold the phone very close to her ear and almost certainly be distracted by the music.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with this phenomenon, it’s called “feathering.” If you’re driving and you see a car who isn’t paying attention to you, you can feel their attention. You’ll know it when you feel it. The same is true when you’re texting while driving. It’s called a feather.
In this video we see a woman’s phone go to text with a man who is driving his car. This is because the man is ignoring her. He isnt paying attention to her. So, as you can imagine, the woman was so distracted by her phone that she accidentally left it in her lap when she sat down.
So, that was pretty disturbing. It is pretty fascinating how we are so quickly distracted by things that are relatively simple to avoid.
A few times this year, we’ve had a driver who was texting and driving and actually managed to kill himself. The best part about this is how the story was edited to make it seem like this accident wasn’t his fault. It turns out he’s actually been texting and driving for years. But the real problem was his phone was so far away that he couldn’t see the lady’s car until it was too late.
We are reminded of how we are so distracted by things that are relatively simple to avoid. A lot of times we have so much to do that we don’t even know what we’re doing. The easiest thing to do is to just do what you normally do. But the reality is that we don’t always do what we usually do.
When we are on autopilot, we are so distracted by all that stuff we don’t even notice the stuff that is easy to avoid. When we are on autopilot, we are just busy so we dont even notice the things that are easy to avoid. This is why I always tell people to avoid distracting themselves with a lot of things that are easy to avoid. It makes it so that when we are on autopilot we just continue to do what we usually do.
